The modified design of the original Ryan M-2 plane has been accurately recreated by Revell with their Spirit of St. Louis model kit. In order to make the 3600 mile flight, a number of modifications had to be made for accommodating additional fuel in the aircraft. As can be seen in the model plane kit, there is no front windshield, since Charles Lindberg decided fuel additional fuel tanks could be placed in front to ensure he had enough to cross the Atlantic Ocean from New York to Paris. At the front of the plane is a perfectly scaled J-5-C Whirlwind engine, while the interior of the Spirit of St. Louis model kit features a detailed cockpit with instrument panel and accurate levers and pedals. While some of the interior is visible through the skylight, some modelers may want to construct the plane with the cockpit door open for a better view.
Once the model plane kit is finished, it can be detailed to appear how it would have before or after the historic flight. Decals include all of the flags added to the plane when Lindberg went on his goodwill tour. Other options include the ability to pose Lindberg standing next to the Spirit of St. Louis or seated at the controls inside it. With some history of Lindberg and the Spirit of St. Louis on the first page of the instructions, the pages after that give detailed illustrations and label each part with real aircraft terminology. Even though the Spirit of St. Louis model kit is rated at a skill level of two, some of the steps, like painting Lindberg’s head with four different paint colors will require a more expert touch.
